VirtualBox wrecks Windows Terminal Services on Vista

Post by elmako »

Hello all, I'm posting this in hope that someone might shed some light.

I downloaded VirtualBox 3.0.0 to try it out on my Windows Vista machine. On the installation I selected network, USB, and Python support.

The installation ran until the progress bar was on 100%, and then it just froze completely there. Eventually after maybe half-hour waiting, I gave up and clicked the cancel button, but nothing happened, eventually I had to restart my machine.

The BIG problem now is it seems somehow this failed installation messed up the Remote Desktop Connection client. I can no longer connect to any machine, when I try I get the following message:
"The remote session was disconnected because the local computer's client access license could not be upgraded or renewed. Please contact the server administrator"
I have googled around that error message and all the answers I find have nothing to do with my problem, somehow the VirtualBox installation messed up my machine's networking or the Terminal Services client. Worst of all is that the RDC client seems to be embedded with Vista, if I was using XP maybe I could try to download and reinstall the RDC client, but I don't know if that is even a possibility with Vista.

I also tried multiple times to install VirtualBox, but no luck, it always freezes at the end of the installation, forcing you to restart, and no improvements to the RDC problem.

:(

Have you tried the repair option at install time? if so try doing this with 2.2.4
Hard Rebooting a pc can cause all sorts of problems depending what files where open/in use, so VBox might not have caused things to get messed up, it might very well be the hard reboot that done this. Using a standard system restore should get things back though.

hey thanks for the tips !

however there is no repair option, when I re-run the virtualbox installation it is not detecting a previous install, and for some reason there is no system restore point available, even though I'm pretty sure I saw Vista making a restore point, go Vista ! (I mean, go to hell).

oh, and I also tried with the previous virtualbox version with identical results.

thanks again, and Vista users please beware...

It remains strange, I use VB on vista as well and even swap VM's with a xp64 host, both have no rdp issues, either from the Host or the Guest.

@elmako,

It sounds like a failed install might be your problem. Read this and see if it will help.
