Huawei UMTS on Windows Guest

Hi,

can anyone give me a short guide how to install a Huawei UMTS-USB-device in Windows XP or similar? I tried to do so and the software Mobile Partner that belongs to the stick always says that no device is available.
What am I doing wrong while installing it?
Thanks a lot.

Try a blank(empty) usb filter.

I have tried that without success.
What is wrong with my virtualbox?

Nothing really, usb dongles are known to be problematic with VBox, I also have such a modem and mine works with an empty filter, but clearly not all do the same.

But doesn't anyone had success in installing a Huawei UMTS USB-dongle in a Winddows Guest?
That cannot be true.

Yep, it works for me, with Linux host (Slackware-current) and WindowsXP guest.

Much earlier I did in Linux the "MAX_USBFS_BUFFER_SIZE"-mod. and edited fstab (/proc/bus/usb usbfs) for sync/update iPodTouch with iTunes(8.2.0.23). So I still use this setup (see for more info; http://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/491).

With VirtualBox 2.2.4 it worked directly without filter, and for 3.0.0 it didn't, went back to 2.2.4 it worked again. I had to use the modem so i didn't look for a fix.Now with 3.0.2 I'd created a filter, otherwise I got a "Error 692: Hardware Failure in the Modem" Error Message When You Dial an RAS Server" like in 3.0.0 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314846).
Used Filter settings:
Name: HUAWEI Technologies HUAWEI Mobile
Vendor ID: 12D1
Product ID: 1003
Rev.: 0000

Now i can use the Huawei usb with vpn connection again. But it seems to have a slow connection, maybe just for the moment, I'll check this during the week when using this setup.
Edit: OK, Speed is good, no issues. Also updated (restore and sync) an iPod(1gen) and iPhone(3G) to firmware 3.0.0 with this same setup.

Is there a fix in the works for MAX_USBFS_BUFFER_SIZE issue? I'm not able to restore my ipod touch 1g with VBOX 3.0.2. and don't want to have to use the MAX_USBFS_BUFFER_SIZE fix.

Hello,

I use Ubuntu 10.04 as Host and would use VB with Windows XP to start the Huawei UMTS-Stick.
If I have a normal Windows XP Host-System, that works good.

But in the Linux version, the USB-Devices are greyed out.
I try it
1. without any Filters,
2. with empty Filter, and
3. with the selectable Huawei Filter in the configuration if guestsystem in NOT running.

In all three cases, the options at USB if the amshine is running are grey and no device is avaiable.

Any Hint for me?

I Use the VB 3.2.6 with the last updatet version of Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid

Best regards

Hi sinndorfer,

As I remember well, I experienced once the same. You'll see the USB connections but can't connect, probably no rights to do so.
I think my solution was; add yourself (USER) to the "vboxusers" usergroup.
If this doesn't help try testing by the follow; you can try to start vbox under root/superuser and see if the USB wil get available for connections...
With vbox 3.2.6 it still works for me even with VPN-connection through the Huawei connection (used it temporary as virtual desktop on my private laptop (linux) while corporate laptop was defective...).

- don't shoot me if I'm wrong!

...nope you don't have to, I just tested it. Add yourself to the "vboxusers" usergroup.

please understand me not opening a new thread as the title matched my question best:

I use an eeepc with ubuntu 12.04 as host and have installed win XP / win7 / debian in vbox to have a platform with which to surf the internet without bothering the linux machine.
For that, I need to use a huawei E173u-1 for mobile internet.
It works fine in ubuntu but I need it working in the virtualized windows as the software that comes with it is for windows only and there is no other way to change the contract parameter (monthly or daily charge)
I checked the threads that proposed solutions to it to no extend. I am a total newbie to the field of virtualisation, not so much with computers at all.
Please point me to the texts I need to read and try.

It wouldnt work, here is what I have done so far:

-added guest user additions.
-let windows run with a fresh filter
-installed the USB2 extension to vbox,
-made sure the logged in user is in the vboxuser list.

There is some sound advise of vbox4me2 :
"It wasn't too diffecult, start the VM with an empty usb filter, focus it, plug in modem and wait for VB to install usb filter driver, when thats done the Guest automatically detects the usb drive part, start the setup from the device, after finish unplug usb and reboot VM.
Focus it, plug in modem and start dashboard. Modems may differ but this one works."
but the driver would install fully in windows 7 or XP. It goes through with the installation but doesnt connect each device that need driver. there is no driver available apart from the .exe installer on the virtualized usbstick.
. os is there anyone how succeeded in initializing the device in a vbox ? (debian wouldnt init it either)

I dont know if I need to configure the filter but tried a variety of options, but still, to no extent.
Is it poossible to let the host (ubuntu) connect to the internet and use some kind of bridge so that vbox can use the hosts internet settings and connect to the internet ?
I am very much fed up with this, am trying 5 days with no solution. would be very pleased for a help. Am willing to even pay for a solution

thanks for taking the time to read (and maybe help me)
