VM within another VM?

Post by colikara »

Using VirtualBox, is it possible to install a VM within another VM?
Desired configuration:
Host OS: Kubuntu 9.04
Guest OS / Second level host OS: Fedora 11
Second level guest OS: Win XP
(I am trying to simulate a Fedora 11 running Win XP in VM without doing it on a stand alone computer.)
I was able to successfully install VirtualBox within the guest Fedora and create a VM within that for Win XP.
The Win XP install CD (mounted in Kubuntu) is visible inside the Fedora and is mapped to the CD-ROM of the VM for Win XP.
However when I start the new VM for Win XP, the VM hangs up rather than doing the install of Win XP from CD as I expected.
I haven't been able to find any references on the forum of others who have successfully done this.

This can not be done is why you have been unable to find a way to do it.
This has been asked a hundred times and the answer is still you can not run VirtualBox from within a virtualized guest.
