Problems Install XP and Server2003 on Virtualbox 3.0.0

Post by mppickard »

I successfully installed virtualbox 3.0.0 on a dell 1526 running Ubuntu 9.0.4. But when I try and install either Windows XP or Server 2003 in a virtual machine the entire laptop freezes. Any ideas? I am a linux newbie and trying to make a go of Ubuntu and only use windows when I need to (via VM) Thanks in advance

Not enough information to be able to help.
Forum Posting Guideline
  • Please provide host and guest memory.
  • What are the VBox settings (all of them) for the guest?
  • What (if any) error messages are you getting?

More information:

I successfully installed Virtualbox 3.0.0
I successfully create a Windows XP virtual machine
I mount the Windows XP CD in the virtual machine window
I reboot the Windows XP virtual machine
The XP install begins, and as the drivers are loading the entire laptop halts
The only thing I can do is power off, and on again

mppickard,

Your install process is not what I need. I need to know the amount of memory that you have in the host and how much you are setting in the guest, plus the settings that you are using in the guest.

The Host has 4G of RAM
The Guest is configured for 1G
The virtual hard drive is set to grow dynamically and is set at an initial 30G size. The Host has a 250G drive with tons of free space.
All the other guest settings are default.

Let's try something simple. Set the memory at 512 and use the WinXP guest and see how far it will get.

Also your profile says OSE other. I need to know where you got the VBox program from.
Was it the Ubuntu repository or did you install it from somewhere else.
After the install fails look in the VBox program (machine tab) and see if it created a log file and if so post it here.

One more thing. Did you add your login to the VBox users group?

Please try following:

Settings -> System -> Motherboard ->
in Extended Features mark "Enable IO APIC"

This should help at least for Win XP

By trial and error i figured out that I had to turn off "Enable VT-x/AMD-V" (un-check it)

After that it worked fine, no lock-ups and I was able to install XP no problem.

The only issue left is that the window is transparent and I cant see the desktop. I dont know how to fix that.
