WinXP Pro installs wrong Ethernet adapter - VBox at fault?

I'm trying to run WinXP Pro in VirtualBox under Linux Mint 7 (Gloria). Here's the problem description as I posted it on the ThinkPad forum. I'm now thinking it may be the fault of VB. I'm using VB 3.

I installed a fresh copy of WinXP Pro on my T43 from a non-IBM disk. It installed the wrong Ethernet Adapter - "AMD PCNET Family PCI Ethernet Adapter" instead of the Broadcom adapter. I'm thinking this may be because VBox offers Ethernet hardware choices for "amxxxxxxxxx..." and Intel adapters. I'm wondering how to change this so I can install the Broadcom driver.

I downloaded the adapter driver from the Lenovo site and ran the .exe file, but it didn't replace the AMD driver with the Broadcom.

The adapter that VBox uses is a virtual adapter. You use it to connect to the host adapter.

You do not install the broadcom driver in the guest.
The adapter that you want to use in the Windows guest is the IntelPRO/1000

Please provide the exact settings that you are trying to use in the guest including all the information for the network setting.

Thanks for the reply. I reinstalled XP Pro to cover the bases, in case I'd screwed things up beyond repair after the first install. This time, it didn't install a hardware networking adapter, and the ethernet adapter is listed under "Other" in Device Manager with yellow - not working.

Here are the current network settings in VBox:

Adapter 1: Intel PRO/1000 MT DESKTOP (82540EM)
Attached to: NAT
No adapter 2, 3, or 4

You probably do not have the drivers for the IntelPRO/1000 MT try changing to the IntelPRO/1000 server and if that does not work you will need to download the drivers for it and put in a shared folder. Copy it across to the guest and run it. You will need to (if you have not already) have the guest additions installed for the shared folders to work.
