setup help

Post by spknrich »

I'm new to virtualBox and am having some difficulty and would like help. I have the most current version of Virtualbox.
My computer uses Vista. I am trying to load Win95 in VirtualBox. I created a boot floppy since Win95 would not boot directly from the CD. My boot order is set as Floppy then CD/DVD.
When I start the VM it boots up to an A:\> prompt. The only other drive I can get it to recognize is B but it is the same as A. All others just read "invalid drive specification". My CD drive is set as E.
Where do I go from here to get Win95 installed?

You need a bootdisk with cd-rom driver on it.
Two examples I found on the net:
http://1gighost.com/ed/brandy/boot95a.exe
http://1gighost.com/ed/brandy/boot95b.exe

To use them you need a computer with windows and a floppy drive.
Or get vfd which is a virtual floppy driver.

It first says "Starting Windows 95" then boots to the following:

CD-Rom Device Driver for IDE (four channels supported)
Driver version :V340
Device Name :Banana
Transfer mode : Programmed I/O
Drive O: Port=170 (secondary channel), master IRQ=15
Firmware version 1.0

MSCDEX version 2.25
Copyright Microsoft Corp. 1986-1995 All Rights Reserved
Drive R: = Driver Banana unit 0
A:\>

OK...so R is my CD Rom and I can get it to read it. How do I set it up from here?
Running SETUP gives me the message "Cannot create a temporary directory. If you have HPFS or NTFS installed on your hard drive, you will need to create an MS-DOS boot partition to set up Windows"
