[Solved] Windows 2000 freezes during boot
[Solved] Windows 2000 freezes during boot
If IO-APIC is enabled (number of CPUs is 1), then booting the Windows 2000 installation CD seems to be impossible. The setup gets stuck at "Setup starts Windows 2000" (that's when the setup starts the NT kernel) and seems top be in an infinite loop (VirtualBox uses 100% of 1 CPU on the host).
Is this a known bug?

No idea but I've never needed ioapic for w2k.

I already filled a bug report on this. http://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/4348
You need I/O-APIC for SMP.

Is this a 64 bit machine? Are you sure that VT-x/AMD-v is turned on in bios?

Re: Windows 2000 freezes during boot
Same problem using an Ubuntu 9.04 x64 (Intel Core i7) host. Windows 2000 will boot with IO-APIC enabled only if ths OS doesn't actually use the IO-APIC (e.g., IO-APIC disabled during initial install and then activated later).
Re: Windows 2000 freezes during boot
Yes, the VT-x/AMD-v Icon is among the other icons.Perryg wrote:Is this a 64 bit machine? Are you sure that VT-x/AMD-v is turned on in bios?
The host is a 64-Bit Linux.

Re: Windows 2000 freezes during boot
Right but did you look in the bios yourself and verify that the hardware-v is turned on?skoehler wrote:Yes, the VT-x/AMD-v Icon is among the other icons.Perryg wrote:Is this a 64 bit machine? Are you sure that VT-x/AMD-v is turned on in bios?
The host is a 64-Bit Linux.
You may also need to upgrade your bios as others have had to do.
Also is the VT-x/AMD-v icon grayed out with a check mark in it? If so that means that it is not available.
Re: Windows 2000 freezes during boot
No, and if I move the mouse over the icon, I get a tooltip that says: "VT-x/AMD-v: active".Perryg wrote:Also is the VT-x/AMD-v icon grayed out with a check mark in it? If so that means that it is not available.
It is enabled in the BIOS. I didn't look for a new BIOS update, but can a new BIOS change the way VT-x works? Because the enable/disable option is already there.

Re: Windows 2000 freezes during boot
The same is true on my system. VT-x works without any Problem in other VMs in VBox and other VM-Software. It is neither unavailable nor deactivated anywhere. (And yes I also reviewed the BIOS-settings)
Why are you are focusing on Hardware Virtualization anyway? The error appears with VT-x enabled and with VT-x disabled, which I guess makes it unrelated.

Because I need the information to see what the problem might be. I do not have these problems and I am trying to find the reason why you and others are.fuUser wrote:The same is true on my system. If you can please try to post your VBox log after you have this failure so we can look at it. Also remember to use the code block because these can be very long.
