no VT-x with Core 2 Duo (VERR_VMX_NO_VMX) [SOLVED]

Post by e.male »

Hi forum,

Just installed 3.0.0 on Ubuntu Jaunty from the repos. When I try to create a new machine with 2 CPUs, I get
VT-x is not available. (VERR_VMX_NO_VMX).
Unknown error creating VM (VERR_VMX_NO_VMX).
CPU is a Core 2 Duo P8400, VT-x is enabled in the bios, vboxdrv kernel drivers are loaded, ...
the CPUID dump portion of the log has this to say
VME - Virtual 8086 Mode Enhancements = 1 (1)
VMX - Virtual Machine Technology = 0 (1)
What am I missing?
Is there a way to test if VT-x is working at all?

ha! enabling VT-x in the bios and restarting is not enough. changes will only become active after powering the machine off. DOH!
someone should have asked me: 'did you turn your computer off and on again? that usually fixes it' :D

well, at least it's working now. SMP will save me lots and lots of time, yay!
