Unable to use Bridged Adapter

Host: Windows XP SP3
Guest: Windows 7 and Kubuntu 9
VBox version: 2.2.4r47978

After upgrading to the latest and greatest VirtualBox version I can no longer start my virtual machines. It tells that the host interface does not exist.

Result Code:
VBOX_E_HOST_ERROR (0x80BB0008)
Component:
Console
Interface:
IConsole {9511bc54-15ee-4ddf-808e-472aba03809c}

Both of my VMs use the Bridged Adapter (or I should say used to use)

Now when I look at the VM settings network tab the following values are observed.
Adapter1:
Adapter Type: PCnet-FAST III (Am79C973)
Attached to: Bridged Adapter
Name: Not Selected

There are no options available in the name drop down box.

If I now exit from the VM settings and go to the application preferences network tab, the host-only networks list is empty. If I try to add one I get the error: Failed to create the host-only network interface.

I've tried recreating the VMs, rebooting, reinstalling and rebooting and various other combinations all to no avail. I am the administrator of the machine so permissions shouldn't be an issue. I did find a bug report logged against the v1.5.x stream, but it was closed as could not replicate.

Can anyone help me please? This used to work flawlessly.

The proper way to have upgraded from Ver 1.x to the newer version was to uninstall first.
The host-interface is no longer used and has been replaced with with bridged.

You may also need to reinstall VirtualBox by right clicking the install icon and then left click on run as admin... select repair when given that option. Reboot after and see if this helps.
If you setup bridges in the host to use the host-interface you will need to remove them now.

Thanks for the quick reply.

I did not upgrade from 1.5.x I upgraded from the previous minor release when the option was offered to me upon starting VirtualBox (2.2.3.x at a guess, but definitely a 2.x version).

I have tried right clicking the installer and choosing RunAs Administrator and rebooting, I've tried repairing and reinstalling this way each time rebooting still no joy.

I have never "setup bridges in the host to use the host interface" so I'm guessing there's nothing for me to do in this case.

What should be listed in the "name" drop down list that currently only displays "Not selected"? I don't recall when setting my VMs up for the first time ever messing about with anything like that.

Why now after a minor install/upgrade would this feature stop working? It would seem that others have had this issue, but repairing the install worked for them or the thread/post went dead without a public resolution.

I sent this http://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic. ... 329#p83365 to a person today that was having similar problems but they were using the 64 bit version. It may help you as well not sure. I do know that there was a problem around version 2.2.0 and registry issues. From what I read in your post it sounds like something (Host-Only) is not getting loaded correctly and that could be because of a registry issue.
