strange prob with guest additions

Post by oleros »

Running Win7 build 7100 on host vista 64 , VB 2.24.
Couldn't find my shared folder so read I had to set up guest additions.
On the guides I've read I see screendunps of users clicking on 'devises' and then selecting G.A. This seems to be a header meny in the guest os.
I don't have that header! Tried to adjust resolution in case it had popped out of the screen but it ain't there.. I'm I being stupid here or does others have similar problem?

Guest additions are installed in the guest.
Start the guest and at the top left corner of the VM window there will be a tab that says devices.
Click that and then install guest additions.
If not thing happens then click devices then unmount the CD/DVD and then click install guest additions.

I know, but as I wrote in my first post: I don't have that header menu.
My guest OS has some black areas on the sides and top/bottom but otherwise it's just the standard win7 desktop..

The no header is most confusing. How are you starting the VM?
Have you tried the host + home (right ctrl + home) to see if the secondary menu will show and using the arrow keys selecting devices then install guest additions?
The black areas indicate that the guest additions are not installed correctly.

Also if this is in the full screen mode or seamless you need to get it back to a normal window to be able to see the header.
Try toggling the (host + L) or (host + f) keys to see if you are in the normal window.

I have now seen the menu but it only occurred during an error when the system froze at startup 0%. I usually don't see that screen, after I press start I go directly to win7's startup screen and after the OS launches the header is not there..
I mapped up an usb drive and was able to transfer files without using shared folder so I'm not so dependent on guest additions anymore but thought I should let you know..

PerryG, thanks, your CTR+home tip worked and I was able to install guest addition sw. By using Host+l/f I got the header too;)
So simple solutions and still I have googled so many sites handling guest addition Q&A's without anyone mentioning this.
I guess I should have read VB documentation but for me this was the default mode so i'm surprised you need to know these litlle tricks to get it working properly.
Thanks anyhow - VB is an impressive piece of sw!
