This is an odd problem. I have Windows XP VMs that connect to a domain. They work great and reliability. Until there is a period on inactivity.
I am using virtual box 2.2.4 (but this problem has been persistent)
I have turned off all power save settings
I have tried different Ethernet (I am currently using Pro/1000 MT Server) options
I am using a bridge network.
After this period of inactivity all my shares disconnect and I cannot even use the login name and password to connect to them.

Re: VirtualBox Windows XP timesout on Domain
Have a look at the properties of the NIC, and look for any power management there.
