I have an external modem hooked up the serial port of my VM server Linux and we have One Windows XP Pro VM. Now the modem works for a while then it just gets stuck. I try to restart the modem the only thing that seems to work is to shutdown the VM and restart it again. The modem will work for a few hours or a few minutes. We need the Modem to Dial into services (sometimes a PPP Connection, other times the old style terminal BBS's), and they will not allow us to connect via more modern methods.
When the modem hangs I am unable to

or type in any commands to the modem.
Is there a Linux setting to make sure it is not fighting with the VM or a VM setting that I am missing.

Re: Modem reliability
I had a similar problem with an external modem on suse 11.0 running virtualbox 2.2.0. Guest is windows 2000. The modem would only work for 5-10 minutes. Since I only needed internet access for the guest I returned control of the modem to linux and set up the guest for internet access using NAT. I would like to know if there is a solution to this in case I ever need direct modem control from a guest.
