Impossible to upgrade or uninstall...

Time ago I've installed VB 2.2.0 as an upgrade of version 1.x
Now I'm trying to upgrade to 2.2.4 and I tried also with 3.0.0 but I'm getting an error. The same is happening if I'm trying to remove the sw installed.
After a moment the setup says "rolling back action", the bar is going backward and (on installs) there is this image:
Where I can find the description of the error?
I tryed on event viewer but nothing seems there.
I'm using Vista Home Premium 64bit SP2...

Try this first:
- Extract the new version to a temp folder and then run just the 64 bit version.
- The command for this is <the name of the install> -extract from a command window. Be sure that the file is in this folder when you run the extract command.
- The other thing is I always right click on the install program and left click on run as administrator. That is what I did when I installed this one, and I did not need to uninstall before the upgrade.
If that does not work then try using
Revo uninstaller to remove all of VBox and then after a reboot install the newer version.

Hi
I am suffering the same problem. I have attempted all steps you suggested. VirtualBox did not show up in revo uninstaller, so i used some different uninstaller which offered some force uninstall mode. I did that - its completely gone now - but I am still getting the same error when I am trying to install. Is there any way to find out what error caused the installer to end "prematurely"? Any other ideas what I could try?
I am using Vista 64 bit with the latest updates.

Well dtag, it might help if you enlightened us a little.
do you receive any error messages?
And yes it you try to install and it fails you will see the reasons in the Vista log files.
Also did you reboot the Host PC before you tried to install after you cleaned out the registry.

Well thats the problem - there is no error message except for the window that was already posted by the original poster.
Yes i did reboot before installing and after cleaning the registry.
Which vista log files do you mean? Where can i see them? I saw entries in the System Event Log but it didn't contain any information about why it failed:

Same issue, running on XP SP2 32-bit, and later on today/tomorrow a different machine running XP SP3 32-bit
So on the XP SP2 machine, I tried the suggested fixes and no joy.
Not much else to say, I just wanted to chime in for XP since it looks like everyone else if posting for vista.
*** UPDATE ***
tried doing what Dtag did below, just with 2.2.4. However the install still rolled back, but I was also never given an option to repair

Then I dug up my 2.2.0 and sure enough I got an option to repair. Performed the repair and rebooted. Then I installed 3.0, which removed 2.2.0 for me. All is well. Thanks for the

Just so I get this right you all have been able to extract this to a temp folder and right click on the appropriate file to install as admin and then it failed, right?
Also the error would be in the system - event viewer - windows logs - application. It should track what you are doing and report the failure or success.

Yes extracing the files worked. However right-click->run as admin doesnt because windows doesnt offer that option. However if you start the msi file it requests admin priviledges at some point so i'm guessing that this is not the problem. I looked at the event logs again and the closest thing i got was an entry which said:
"Das Produkt wurde durch Windows Installer installiert. Produktname: Sun xVM VirtualBox. Produktversion: 3.0.0. Produktsprache: 1033. Erfolg- bzw. Fehlerstatus der Installation: 1603."
Which means in english:
The product has been installed by the windows installer. Product name: ... Product Version: ... Product language: ... Success/Errorstatus of the installation: 1603"
I googled for that errorcode and all I am finding is "A fatal error occurred during installation."

Exact same error when the registry is messed up.

My status:
1. manual msi running was not helping
2. I did the registry editing
3. I tried to install 3.0.0 but got the same error
4. I then tried the 2.2.4 and got it!
Now it seems I've the 2.2.4 version installed...
