Hi,
My office machine had only windows xp on it, so I installed Virtualbox 2.2.4, and did a full installation of slackware 12.2 in Vb.
In virtual machine network settings, I chose the 'PCnet-Fast III', working in 'NAT' mode. In the guest os, the network is configured in DHCP mode.
Now the problem is, in the guest os, I can use ssh and telnet to access other machines (outside my company), but CANNOT use browser to surf the internet (there is no error message, but a blank page, whatever website I visit) or use pidgin. By the way, the browser of host os (Win XP) works fine.
Actually I tried other distros, like fedora & debian, both have this problems, so I think this is more probably the problem of Virtualbox. Anyone has similar problem and knows a solution?
Thanks!
can ssh but cannot use browser in linux guest

Guessing:
Does your XP use a proxy? Perhaps your company has some firewall that blocks you unless you go via it.

Seems not. The host os uses DHCP, I didn't set proxy in the browser.
Since it's company network, I believe there is a firewall that might block some ports.
But does the guest machine use a different port to access the internet? Why in the guest os, ssh is ok, but browser dosen't work?

Yes that is why I susppect something like that. Best would be if you asked your it-guys if you should have some proxy settings. It's possible that your computer was preconfigured like that or that internet explorer auto detects something so either dig around in explorer or ask them.

Re: can ssh but cannot use browser in linux guest
Fixed! Thanks. I checked internet explorer->tools->internet options->connections->lan settings, and found the proxy server there.
Now I set the proxy server in guest os firefox, now I can surf.
Thanks!
