Cannot make USB work on "bare metal" VM

Hi,
Since two years ago, and every new version of VB, I try to restore a ghost image from USB external storage, with no success.
All I want is to define new VM with just empty hard drive and CD-ROM and USB storage.
Further more, once I get stuck on the USB issue, I MUST power off my Windows using the power switch as I cannot kill the VBoxSVC.
I uninstalled and reinstalled VB many times with same results.
When using regular Windows XP client VM I have no problems somehow to get to the USB drive. But this issue is for system with no OS on the hard drive.
I have Windows XP Pro SP3 on Pentium 4 2.93Ghz with 2GB RAM and plenty space on SATA drive.
I must do the steps in the wrong order, or my PC is not compatible.
Has anyone successfully restored a ghost image to "bare metal" VM from a USB storage?
If it can be done, I think I need more help on how to move the USB capture from Windows to VB while booting CD into DOS system.
Thanks.
