Dear All,
I tried to connect my SE handy yesterday on the VBox, but it doesn’t work. First of all, I activated the USB controller. Then I add the filter for my SE handy and at the end I started the VBox. After I connected my handy to USB, I got the USB icon in the bottom right corner and Windows XP created a new LAN Connection 3.
Windows XP is trying to get an IP but after 1 minute I get the message ‘This connection has limited or no connectivity’!
How can I solve this problem?
PS: I used Windows XP Prof for Host and on the VBox is also Windows XP Prof installed. Current version of VBox is 2.2.4. It should be no problem to use USB but I tried it just for SE and no other devices at the moment.
Thanks for your help.
Regards
Netzero

Re: USB using problems!?
Your profile says that you are using the OSE version of VirtualBox.
USB only works in the PUEL version.

Re: USB using problems!?
I think, I already use the PUEL version, because I downloaded the install file VirtualBox-2.2.4-47978-Win (ca. 63MB).

Re: USB using problems!?
A Blank Filter will allow almost everything to work but once you boot the guest you must unplug the device and plug it back in to allow the guest to get focus. The (+) or fixed filter makes it available to the guest as soon as it boots but has problems.
Or you can click on the enable USB and not set any filters. Then once in the Windows guest you can select the device from the USB icon and it will become mounted.
Now you must understand that not all devices will work in VirtualBox via USB. You can search through the many discussions here by putting USB site:forums.virtualbox.org in google
You might also want to update your profile to say VirtualBox Type = PUEL to avoid more references to not having PUEL installed.

Re: USB using problems!?
-- I've tried reporting this issue before but apparently to no avail that I have been able to discern. There appears to be an issue with handshaking between VBox and the host OS for mounting USB devices -- at least with Mac OSX. Some seem to work O.K. and others do not.
-- There are quite a few threads refering to USB device connectivity issues. Going thru them gives the impression that many relate to the issue cited above & described in references below.
-- I posted a blog entry that points to a description of the symptoms. Blog entry title: "Macintosh OS X Virtual Machine Manager Evaluation" dated 2009-01-31 in blog title: "Opa Tech Notz" (URL: http://opatechnotz.blogspot.com/ ). In last section, under rubric "Virtual vs hardware-based machines" there is a hyperlink to article titled: "VBox USB device interoperability issue" which should bring up a html document page highlighting the results of trying to work out the USB connectivity issue.
-- Hopefully, there is enough detail there to help the developers get to the crux of the issue. I have been held up in progressing further with my general Mac OSX - VMM evaluation until this issue is resolved. I depend on access to one of the USB devices that do not work with VBox. In the meantime, VMware keeps on plugging along in daily use with the USB device in question (as well as all the others cited in the VBox USB device interoperability issue" document. Hopefully, the issue will be resolved by the time of VBox v 3.0 release.
(previous post in Sun xVM Ops Center forum "xVM Virtual Box on Mac OS X" dated Feb 14, 2009 7:04 AM -- have been unable to locate other item I thought I had posted subsequently in Virtualbox.org forum.)

-- After posting the above, access became blocked to the html document hyplerlinked from the blog I cited. That document contains details describing symtpoms & behaviors related to VBox - Mac OSX interaction issues with respect to USB device handshaking. The document has been updated & now available as pdf file upon request. The blog has been changed accordingly. (The report represents several hundred hours of personally invested effort if not close to or more than a thousand hours.)
