Sharing Files?

Post by acrimon »

I'm confused. I added a shared folder and it didn't list it anywhere. I have the latest version.

I checked under Network Places.

What is Guest Additions?

First welcome to the forum acrimon,

You must install the guest additions for VirtualBox shared folders to work.
You should read a little in the VirtualBox Users Guide to familiarize yourself with what and how to do this.
You can also pickup some information and how to do certain thing with VirtualBox from here: VirtualBox FAQ

You should also read the Forum Posting Guide on what information is needed to be able to help you for the future.

Thanks for the reply. I installed the Guest Additions for my version and still absolutely no luck.

I installed XP Pro, then installed Guest Additions

Now I can't do the x: //vbox..../foldername thing

And I don't see it anywhere under Network Places.

Anyone else had this problem?

You have entered it incorrectly. See below:

Process to share a folder for Windows Guest.
  • Close the guest (shutdown)
  • Open the VirtualBox program and click once on the guest.
  • Click settings and then click on shared folders.
  • Click the folder with the green + to add a new share
  • Click the down arrow on the folder path then click the Folder that says other.
  • This brings up a browse window. Browse to the folder that you want to share and click OK.
  • This will put the full path in your folder path line
  • Click on the box just below that and type shared then press enter.
At this point you have created the shared folder.
  • Now open (start) the guest.
  • Click the program start button and then open a command window or click in the run box and type cmd and press enter.
  • Put this in the command window: net use x: \\vboxsvr\shared -p and press enter
  • After this the share will show in the file manager as a mapped drive.

Once again thank you for the help.

I just did everything you said and absolutely nothing happened.

I kept getting the 53 error in dos that no such place exists.

I installed the Guest Additions for my version and still absolutely no luck.
Exactly what do you mean by this?
Windows guest additions are automatic and you should not be required to select anything.

The proper way to install the guest additions are as follows:

Start the guest
Click on the devices tab at the top of the VirtualBox window.
Click on install guest additions. If nothing happens then you need to click on unmount the cd/dvd and then click on install guest additions again.
You should see the Guest Additions being installed and then told to reboot the computer (guest)
Once this is complete then you need to follow the above instructions to mount the shared folder.
