Windows XP vm crashes after installing service pack 3

Hi,
I have a windows XP vm that won't boot anymore after installing Windows XP service pack 3. The service pack installed without errors but after the reboot I get errors about services.exe and lsass.exe that cannot start. The VM then locks up and I have to do a forced-shutdown to exit. This happened once previously when installing a windows security update and could only be fixed by running a full windows repair using the install disk. I obviously cant do this every time I need to install an update so I am hoping that someone has a solution for me.
System info :
Ubuntu 9.04
VirtualBox 2.2.4
Nothing special installed on the VM except it is using Symantec Endpoint protection for AV.
Thanks in advance,
Billy
