Exporting\Importing on Window Vista

Exporting\Importing on Window Vista
I am donig Exporting\Importing on 64 bits Window Vista host with 32 bits Window XP guest. According to the directory, the virtual machine harddrive format is vmdk. The result of the exporting is also vmdk plus a ovf(xml) files, however, it has taken a very long time for the export, and it also take a very long time to import it back. What is the reason of this because it should just be a direct copy of the vmdk harddrive?
