Cannot Uninstall....Cannot Upgrade

I have VirtualBox 2.2.2 installed. I tried upgrading to 2.2.4. The install hung for about 15 minutes. Cancelling didn't work either. I had to force a restart of my computer. Now the system won't go into Standby, and I can't even uninstall VirtualBox 2.2.2. That process hangs as well. I'm stuck. Can't install, can't uninstall.
What's the next step?

What is the Host computer?
If it is Windows you can try to right click on the install icon and left click on run as...Admin. Then select repair. Reboot when finished.

The host system is Windows XP, and I'm logged in with an account will full Administrator rights. The install starts. The problem is that it hangs.
I tried removing 2.2.2 using Revo Uninstaller, and that worked. I didn't use it to delete any registry keys or other files on the hard drive. I restarted, and then I installed 2.2.4. That went fine. I opened VirtualBox and found that some previous configuration files were clearly left behind because the new version attempted to load all the virtual systems I had installed. I closed it, and tried to put the system in stand by again, and once again, it froze.
I then tried to remove 2.2.4 with Revo Uninstaller, and that was unsuccessful. I tried twice. The second time I interrupted the hung uninstall process by forcing a restart, and that seemed to kick the uninstall process in gear and completed the uninstall. Now my system goes into stand by again.
It appears I have to make a choice: Do I want to use VirtualBox, or do I want to be able to put the computer in standby. Idieally, I'd like to do both.
What's the next step in trying to resolve these issues?
