Minimal Linux configuration for host

The idea is have kind of a "server" running Linux (Ubuntu preferable) with different hosts. Other computers will connect to the server and run the machines remotely.
The questions I can think right now are:

- Can vbox be FULLY managed from another machine? It will be required to start the machines before the clients can connect.
Does the host requires X11? (it's kind of a memory hog)
Can the host have more than one physical interface? I will like to associate a physical interface to one (or more) machine. Is this possible?
