Failure to attach USB Device

Post by ianwood1 »

I need to use a USB security key for a program running under Windows XP.
At start up I receive the following message:
Failed to attach the USB device SafeNet USB Ultra Pro (0200) to the Virtual Machine XP
(Error:VERR_GENERAL_FAILURE)

and looking at Details I see:
Result Code: NS_ERROR_FAILURE (ox80004005)
Component: Console
Interface: IConsole
followed by a long string of alphanumeric characters

Can anyone throw any light on what I can do to attach my USB Security Key?

Thanks

Hi Ianwood1,

Have you tried creating a filter for your USB device? If not give this a try.

Hi HipHoppity,
A Filter was created initially and checking that again today shows it to be in order. Also, I have another SafeNet USB security key and it behaves the same as the first key and will not work either.

Both of the SafeNet USB keys work OK under Windows outside of VirtualBox, that is in another computer running Windows XP only.

Any further ideas would be most welcome.

Thanks

Hi Ianwood1,

You might want to try deleting your current filter and creating a new filter. If you've not tried creating an empty filter under the (.) symbol versus a device specific filter with the (+) symbol then that sometimes can do the trick. Also, try unplugging and replugging your USB security key once you've got the VM booted up after making the new filter.

Hope this helps you get past this hurdle.

Hi HipHoppity,
Thank for your help. Unfortunately creating an empty flter under (.) symbol does not work.

Thanks again

That's too bad Ianwood1 -- sorry to hear that. This got me thinking, on one of my Hosts I had to reinstall the VBox 2.2.4 upgrade to get my USB devices working properly with the WinXP guest.

Unless someone here can give us more insight into the nature of your error code, this might be worthwhile to try. If you go this route remember to redo your filters. Best of luck with this.

Hello again,
I have loaded VirtualBox 3 and my SuperPro USB security device still will not attach.

Any assistance with this problem would be most welcome.

Hi Ian,

When you start your VM is the USB security dongle attached prior to startup? If so, you might want to try getting your VM Guest up-and-running before attaching the security key (with VBox USB filter in place).
