I have been researching the problem of reading and burning (as data)
http://fy.chalmers.se/~appro/linux/DVD+RW/
and also playing purchased Blu-Ray Discs (BD)
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Restr ... ayAndHDDVD
under Ubuntu Linux. It is safe to say that native support for Blu-Ray under Linux is lacking.
This is where Virtualization can come to the rescue.
I want to install VirtualBox on an Ubuntu host and then install Windows7 as a guest. The plan is to then install the Windows Driver support for my Blu-Ray player under the Windows 7 guest.
Has anybody tried this? Any reason why this shouldn't work?
The safe thing to do would be to Install Windows 7 as the host and Ubuntu as the guest but I would rather do it the other way around.

Re: Blu-ray on a Windows 7 guest
I talked to a friend who suggested looking into USB tunneling. I found the following:
From Cheech'i at http://forums.macosxhints.com/showthread.php?p=530852
"Here is how I got [Virtualbox and USB] working in XP & Vista. Try this and tell me what you get.
1. open virtualbox, don't open a VM
2. go into the USB properties for the VM you want, add a USB filter.
3. install a USB device. (note- I used a mouse on one and a numeric keypad on another,
both worked fine. Also you should see the trackpad and keyboard as options in the list)
4. Set the filter to see that device.
5. Start the VM. Do you have guest additions installed? I use that on all my VM's but I'm
not sure if it's necessary since it's my step 1 of a new VM.
6. in the bottom right corner of the VM you have network, disks, you should have the USB
filter. Verify that the filter you set is what the VM is seeing.
7. You should be able to use any usb device on any port now. Takes a little getting
used to if you want to use it on the mac instead, but overall it works fine for me."
Cool.
