WinXP on PUEL 2.2.4 Cannot find Network on Ubuntu 9.04

Post by myotis »

WinXp in Virtual Box cannot detect my Network (Router + NAS + Printer)

All my machines are set up to use a workgroup called myotis, but when I click on myotis on my network places in Windows, I get a workgroup not available message The list of servers for this workgroup is not available.

I can connect to the internet OK and shared folders work OK, but I can't see the NAS.

The documentation on the Ubuntu site suggests that for 8.01 you need to run but not sure if this is relevant to the problem or 9.04

sudo modprobe vboxnetflt

But as Linux as well as all the rest is very new to me, I'm not sure what to do, or indeed where the problem might be. It could of course be a Ubuntu issue rather than a Virtual Box issue. As such I have posted asimilar question to the Ubuntu forums.

many thanks,

Graham

Which is your guest, and which is your host?

If windows is the guest, what network mode are you using (nat, bridged, host only, etc). If you are using nat, try bridged. If you are using bridged, try nat.

The silly windows browsing protocol relies on various udp&tcp ports, and broadcast mechanisms. So it is sometimes non-trivial to get working. If you go to explorer in windows, and type \\<ip-address-of-nas>\ <ENTER> what happens?

The host is Ubuntu and the guest winxp. I am using NAT and changing to Bridged results in me losing my internet connection.

From explorer in windows I can type in the router address and get the router get the router management console and type in the NAS address and get the NAS management console, so the NAS seems to be accessible.

Typical things to check are firewall issues, DNS resolution, ip address scheme of both guest and host.

From what you have stated it appears to be a name resolution problem where as you say you can access it via ip address but not by name. If this is truly the case you can put the name and address in the resolv.conf in Linux and the hosts file in Windows. Another common problem is if Windows is set to not allow network discovery which you can change in the properties of the network.

As for NAT working and Bridged not working you need to look at the configuration of your network adapter. It may be that it is not set properly for bridged since you started with NAT.

perryg: resolv.conf is only dns configuration he should use /etc/hosts exactly as one uses c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts on windows.
Some say: "You learn as long as you live".
My way: "You live as long as you learn".

I'm afraid this is a bit much for me.

I have turned off the WINXP firewall completely.

I have added 192.168.1.10 NAS
to c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
/etc/hosts
resolv.conf

I can't find anything googling about Network discovery in WINXP

None of this has helped

But I don't understand exactly what is happening here. when I click on Network places in Explorer is it looking for NAS, and I have now told the system that NAS is at 192.168.1.10.

I was hoping that once the NAS was mounted on Linux, Windows might have found it as a folder.

OK I wrote it wrong ( brain you know what) and baf corrected me above. The information does not go in the resolv.conf it goes in /etc/hosts. Try removing the entry from resolve.conf and putting it in the /etc/hosts file.

Thanks, Do I need to restart Linux or Windows after these changes?

Well, I have restarted and its made no difference.

However, I now seem to have two items in windows network on Ubuntu My NAS called NAS and another item called myotis, which cannot be mounted, Not that I know what it is or where its come from.
