I'm running VirtualBox on Windows Vista, and I'm trying to run a high-graphics bit of Fedora. Nothing fancy, just the standard graphics. I'm pretty sure my graphics card is compatible, I've checked it for compatibility (yes, it is) and if it's up-to-date (yes, it is). So, all in all, is Fedora not recognizing my graphics card a problem caused by being run in a Virtual Machine, or is it something else? (Oh, and I'm running Fedora 11 on the VM) Thank you pre-emptively for your response!

I don't seem to be able to, I think it's because I'm not used to the Virtual Machine. Perhaps someone can aid me, once a mount the .iso file, what do I do? And in simple terms, please, that could be part of my problem.

For reference the Fedora guest CAN'T access your graphics card. If you are trying to do something that requires some specific thing available in your graphic card this won't work.

What, exactly, are you trying to do? Or what is the problem you are seeing?
The guest boot with a low resolution? Low color mode?
Or are you trying to run a specific program and its not working?

All I'm trying to do at the moment is enable Desktop Effects. Is that not possible in the VM?

Have you installed the guest additions, and were they successful? Did you get any error messages when you installed the guest additions?
If so you need to click the enable 3D effect in the guest settings.

I'm having a lot of confusion while installing the guest additions. I've read a lot of the forums, guides, etc. I unload the installing .iso, I load the VirtualBoxGuestAdditionsblahblahblah.iso and go to Devices > Install Guest Additions. I've tried to follow a lot of the instructions, but they don't make sense to me. Also, I have trouble logging into the root feature (it seems to not be able to authenticate the login), so it's all an impossible situation from my point of view. Pointers?

Open a terminal in fedora. type su and press enter. type your password and enter. Copy the following in the terminal window (exactly as it is)
Then reboot your guest.

Open the terminal again and type su then press enter and your password and press enter again.
Now click in the device tab at the top and then install guest additions.
If nothing happens click on the device tab and then unmount the CD and then click on install guest additions. This will open the CD on your desktop.
Dbl click until you see the file vboxLinuxaddtions-x86.run (or the one that says AMD64 if your host is 64 bit). Right click to copy and then paste it in the terminal window and press enter.
Sometimes you need to put sh in front of this line to get it to install but you can use your arrow key to do that.
Watch for any error messages and reboot when it is done.

wow, that worked really well! The only problem comes at the very end... I'm logged in as root in the terminal [root@localhost liveuser] and it says "permission denied". Solutions?

Edit: I'm now logged in as [root@localhost] and I'm trying it again, give me a moment

Not sure what you mean but you can type exit and hit enter to get out of SU mode.

In both SU and non-SU mode, I drag in the .run file and I get a bash notice saying "permission denied". Essentially, there's some sort of permissions problem, I assume, but it won't even let root install this. Any idea what's up?

Aha, I might have this working! I used "yum install" and then I dragged in the file. will this work?

Just put sh at the front of the command as I indicated you might need to do.

EDIT: and you must be in SU mode to install this.

Either way it says "bash: /home/liveuser/.gvfs/VBoxGuestAdditions_2.0.4.iso/VBoxLinuxAdditions-amd64.run: Permission denied"

I'm running the SU mode on [root@localhost ~] - is something wrong? adding sh doesn't work either, it just says "sh: /home/liveuser/.gvfs/VBoxGuestAdditions_2.0.4.iso/VBoxLinuxAdditions-amd64.run: Permission denied"

The reason you are getting this error is because you are in a bash terminal and you need to run it as shell with su power.
Ok first you log in normal as a normal user
Then you open a terminal window and type su the press enter and give it your password and press enter again.
This will give you the permission to install software. Unless you setup a different password for the root user when you installed. If so you must use that password.
Then you follow what I sent earlier to open and copy the file and drop it in the terminal window.
Now you use the left arrow key to get to the beginning of the line and type sh and press the space bar. Then hit your enter key.
