Varcri's post on 4January worked to get my XP guest to recognize the serial port. Basically I got the little yellow triagle in the device manager. I went in and manually configured to port to match the settings in the Virtual Box's serial port set up. I was then able to get the XP guest to see the port and use it in hyperterminal.
