Need help with serial port please

I am trying to get a serial port to work with windows xp > ubuntu 9.04 and having no luck.
I have the serial port as com1 on xp, on ubuntu its /dev/ttyS0
I have run the hardware wizard on xp, I have tried just about everything... please help!

Welcome to the forum mikepc.
Serial ports are somewhat hard to get going but if you follow the Users Guide you should be able to make it happen. See chapter 3.7.6. Serial ports of the users guide.

Ok I have re-read the documentation.
The closest I get to success is the program I am using tell me "port is in use" on windows (the program I am using is blips)
I am pretty sure I have the right settings (as abouve)

Ok, I have just tried to program it from a windows machine, it worked, so its down to virtual box not working correctly.
