Ever since I installed Virtualbox on my Vista x86 everytime I start my PC my firewall tells me new network detected. Is this normal? How do I fix this?

I suspect that you had a problem with the install, more specifically the Windows UAC and unlike most at least yours works, albeit the annoying warning message. There may be a solution though.
  • Reinstall VirtualBox by right clicking the install icon and left clicking run as administrator.
  • Select repair when given the choice and then reboot after you have completed the re-installation.

I've had this annoying problem also. Even worse, doing a ipcfg /renew takes 15 minutes to complete!

Solution, uninstall the Virtual Host Adaptor from the network devices.

I have tried the Administrative repair and the removal of the Virtual host adapter from my host vista laptop and still cannot get them to talk. Any other suggestions?

If you are still having problem with communications between guest and host after you have run the install as admin (indicated above) then you more than likely have a firewall issue. You will need to modify it to include communications between units on the same network segment.

I added back the Virtual host adapter once I found it didn't fix the problem. Then did another administrative repair and that didn't work.

As for the firewall, I have turned off the firewall on both host and guest, no luck.
Any other suggestions?

Post the network settings that you are using for this guest.

Bridged, NAT, Internal, Host-only? Can you ping the host from the guest and guest from the host?

NAT, no pinging either way.

Switch to bridged mode and you will be good to go, unless you want to do port forwarding to make this happen.

When I tried bridged mode and went to boot the guest, I got an error message that there were no bridged adapters. So, I bridged my local area connection and the virtual connection and it still gave me the same error.

I am clearly missing something here.
I changed it to Host and am capable of pinging the virtual adapter from both host and guest but no further.
Thanks for your help here.

I got it to work finally! Here is what I did:

Left it in Host mode. Configured my bridged connection with a local ip(192.168.0.46). Configured my Virtual host with 192.168.0.45. Configured my guest as 192.168.0.44. I cannot ping .45 from either side(host or guest) but I can ping .46 from both. I can also ping the host dg and yahoo. I was even capable of joining my domain. However, I had to reboot the guest before I ping it from various machines on my network.

Thanks for your help.
