DNS problem with VB 2.2.4 under XP

Post by tomazi »

Hello,

I have a network problem after installing VB 2.2.4 under Windows XP :
- ping <ip address of http://www.google.com> is ok
- nslookup http://www.google.com is ok
- when browsing http://www.google.com from the host, the DNS resolution doesn't seems to work and the page can not be found
- when browsing with the ip address, it works fine

After a uninstallation, everything is back to normal.

Does anyone had something similar or has any clue to correct this?

Thanks

Re-install VBox by right clicking the install icon and then left click on run as admin. Select repair if given the option. Reboot after the install is finished.

Hello,

Thanks for the reply. I have done what you told. Unfortunatly the problem is the same:
1. ping 209.85.229.99 - ok
2. nslookup www.google.com - ok
3. ping www.google.com - KO
If have sniffed with Wireshark, stages 1 and 2 are normal (DNS traffic on 53/udp) but no packet is seen when performing the stage 3 ping www.google.com on any network interface!

Again, when uninstalling VB (needed to access the forum!), everything is back to normal.

If you have any tips, I will appreciate very much
Thanks

Do you have a vpn program installed on the host, like cisco or at&t?
The reason I ask this is the only other thing that I have seen that caused this problem. If you do (from what I have read) is after VBox is installed you need to reinstall the vpn program again.
Other than that it must be a conflict somewhere.

I had a vpn client installed. I uninstalled it, reboot and then reinstall VB 2.2.4. Still the same problem :-(

So did you "Re-install VBox by right clicking the install icon and then left click on run as admin. Select repair if given the option. Reboot after the install is finished." after you uninstalled and rebooted the computer? Seems to be a sticky point on some Windows installs.
