Can (and should) we upgrade without uninstalling first?

This is for discussing general topics about how to use VirtualBox.

Can (and should) we upgrade without uninstalling first?

Neither the download page nor the user manual mention whether you can (and should) run new installations without uninstalling old ones first. Please address it.

Thanks!

Maintenance upgrades do not require you to un-install first, but as a rule I never upgrade over the previous install. I have seen it cause way too many problems.

So how do you keep your old settings? Likewise for images which I doubt you export and import after each new version.

Un-installing VirtualBox does not remove the vurtualbox.xml file nor does it remove the machine xml files, just the program and drivers. When you install the newer version (if you do not tell it to install somewhere else) it will pickup the control and operating files and load them.

They will be left on the drive as well and picked up when you install the new version.
