loss of guest keyboard input

Hello All,
I'm new to VirtualBox having been a VMWARE user for the past couple of years and although I like what I've experienced so far I am experiencing a strange problem I can't seem to find an answer to in the forums or in Google.
What happens is I successfully launch my virtual image (it's still my VMware vmdk but it seems to work) via the commandline:
VBoxSDL --startvm windows_xp --fullscreen -evdevkeymap
My focuss is then placed in my Windows XP guest environment and all works well for a few minutes (5-10). Then, my keyboard input seemingly stops/disconnects/locks.
I should include here that I am blind and use the JAWS screen reader so I am unable to see anything on-screen that might give me a clue as to why the keyboard stopped functioning. I know the guest is still active as JAWS still speaks the windows clock time.
If anyone has any ideas or clues as to what may be causing this problem and how I can fix it that would be me much appreciated.
I am running Ubuntu Jaunty with the VirtualBox V2.2.2 package.
Thanks,
Monty
