Big fish games and virtualbox

Post by ddesmarais »

Greetings all.

I just moved my wife from Windows XP to Mint Linux 7. One of her disclaimers about switching to linux is that she can still player these Big Fish games she loves.

So I installed a windows xp vm (sp3) using Virtualbox 2.2.0, updated and installed flash and sun java which I thought was required for the game.

When first running the game it generates the following error log:

----
[16:28:2-0] Default video card dosn't support stensil buffer.
cGraphics::cGraphics(HWND _hwnd)
cEngine::cEngine(sContext &_context)
Restart the game please.
----

Has anyone had any sucess getting these games running. I know VB has OpenGL support in beta but I don't think this applies ( I did try enable 3d acceleration . . . no dice)

The google has been no help either.

Thanks
Meatsack

Best to check the game and make sure they do not require DirectX. VBox does not support DirectX yet.

I have had a hell of a time trying to run some Windows board games under Wine in Ubuntu 8.x. These games are from Reflexive Arcade which are quite comparable to the Big Fish's ones. I have had 100% failure and plenty of weird issues: computer hang up, extreme slowness, and most of the time I got the Xorg.conf corrupted and Ubuntu lost it graphic settings. Once, it went as far as I could no longer select the screen resolution to the one I wanted. After wasting too much time fiddling with Xorg.conf with no results, I ended up re-installing Ubuntu. Personally, I find Ine highly unstable. It's OK to execute some text based applications but I will never run any games using Wine.

I find wine works well with *some* of the Big Fish Games but it takes some time to get it working. I had to mess with winetricks / winedoors as well to get the right dll's installed.

Virtualbox 3.0 with beta support for directx appears to work (as in all the directx test for dxdiag work) but the first BFG game I installed would just beep at me.

Thats why they call it a beta I guess.
