USB Partially Working [Solved]

Post by hercule18 »

Hi,

I have a strange behaviour of my virtualbox as when I start my Xp guest, in the virtual box windows i can see usb devices detected but all in grey.
i'm not able to connect them to the guest.

whereas if I launch virtualbox with su command I can connect them to the guest.

I never had this problem before, but I recently changed my ubuntu release as my virtualbox.

hope someone will help me

bye

herc.

I have this problem too. I am a member of vbox group but I can't get usb pendrive to work. I also have a cellphone and I can connect to the guest OS when it is set to "pc suit" mode but cannot connect when it is in "mass storage" mode.

@zelhar,

For the pendrive:
Use a blank filter (.) and then boot the guest. Unplug the USB device and plug it back in to get focus and it should appear in the guest.

For the cell phone though it may not work as a storage device (at least in VBox). Not all devices work.

@ Perryg,

The devices can be detected, but they appear in gray an are inaccessible. I use ubuntu and I see that my user name appears in the vboxusers group. I think the problem has something to do with access rights to mounted drives (even though I did unmount the drive). I will try to see if I can disable automount and see if that would help.

Also be sure that the guest additions are installed.

Guest additions are installed. I disabled the automount, it didn't fix the problem.

what version of Ubuntu are you using?
In my laptop I have 9.04 host and it auto detects that there is a USB device and mounts it.
I have no statements at all in the fstab.
More over when I set the filter to the USB device it auto loads it in Ubuntu guest.
I will try to install XPpro later as a guest and see if it causes any problems

I uses (x)ubuntu 9.04 clean install, not from upgrade, and I use vbox2.2.4 from sun's repo. I use to be able to access usb just fine until my hard drive died. I had the same system and all except it was upgraded rather than a clean install.

One more thing thing I've just tried- I manage to access the usb storage devices when I start vbox as root. Therefore, I think the problem is entirely due to some ubuntu access rights conflicts and not due to drivers or anything to do with the vbox itself.
