I wrote an extremely simple OS that outputs a string, waits for 1 character input, and then terminates the boot process with int 18. I wrote it to a floppy, and this floppy was booted successfully using VB in XP. However, when I try to boot from the floppy in exactly the same way in Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty (maybe support is not available for this new OS yet?) I get that FATAL error: No bootable medium, when there definitely (**verified**) a bootable OS there.

Clue to the devs: whenever I try to boot and I get the error mentioned above, I power off the virtual machine and every time I do this, at this point the floppy drive (external) begins to hum and spin. I have no idea what this could mean, but I thought it might help discover a solution.

you could try with attaching a floppy image instead, generate with dd if=/dev/fd0 of=foobar.img
