Connect to Guest OS from Host without Network?

I'm trying to find out, if what I WANT to do, is even possible with Virtual Box (or anything else).

I'm trying to create a backup contingency system.

I'd like the Host to be Windows (either XP or Server) and the Guest OS
be Redhat AS 4.

I'd like both OS's to be connected to the network, either with one or 2 Nics.
The Redhat OS would be getting continuous database updates from a remote host while the network was up.

Now the tricky part (for me anyway).
If the network goes down, I need to be able to access/connect from the Host OS
to the Redhat OS.

Is this even possible? I've tried playing with VMware, searching various web
forums, etc.. but have only managed to totally hose the system to the point
of starting over!

Let me know if you need more information, thanks!

In virtualbox for your guest set one networkcard as "host-only" this will give full access between guest and host and should always work.
Add one network card as bridged this one should in the guest have a real ip-address on your network.
That should do the trick.

The guest still needs to be able to connect to a remote server (getting database updates), while the network is still up, then be able to connect to the host only when the network is down.
Will your suggestion work in this way?
And thanks for the quick reply, this thing is driving me crazy!

Yup host-only will always work. bridged only when connected.
And if it is the guest that connects to a server to get data then you could try using nat on the second adapter.

Great! I'm going to give this a try! I already have 2 nics installed, and virtualbox downloaded..just need to install it and configure it.
I will let you know what happens!
Thanks again!
