Accessing files from WinXP host from Ubuntu guest

Hello.

I'm fairly new to the sysadmin world of Linux so I'm learning with VirtualBox running on a WinXP machine. I have Ubuntu 8.04 as the guest. I'd like to transfer files from WinXP to the Ubuntu guest and can't seem to figure out if it's possible and if it is, how to do this.

Can someone point me to a resource or provide instructions? I've Googled many things and have not found anything that works.

If it's not possible to do a direct file copy and paste what are some other options?

Thanks!

Welcome to the forums,

You probably want to setup a shared folder in VBox. You can see how to do this here Forum FAQ - GA & Share

You might want to bookmark this too. Full of helpful tidbits.

Hi,

Thanks for your reply. Yes, I mounted the shares and can view them when I do ls -l in the directory. But I don't see them in my file browser and I can't figure out how to copy files from winxp to ubuntu.

Thanks.

Where did you mount the shared folder? What was the exact mount statement that you used?

It's mounted in home/(user directory)

Here's what I used

sudo mount.vboxsf MyShare /MyShare

This is the command for mounting a folder in Ubuntu given what you sent. You probably should not use caps though it can cause problems.

Code: Select all

sudo mount -t vboxsf MyShare /home/<your user name>/MyShare
It is all explained here http://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=15868

my previous post- browse local network from Linux guest - same result, different approach. Adding the bridged adapter let the guest see all shared resources on the local network, which included the host.
Of course, if you want only certain folders to be shared with that guest, then the bridged adapter might not be the way to go?

Bridge is the way to go, you must see the Bridge as a switch with virtual unlimited ports.
