Host Only + NAT Networking Assistance Needed
I am running vbox 2.2.4 on windows server 2003
my guest OS is ubuntu 8.04 server LTS
my global network configuration on vbox is as follows:
VirtualBox Host-Only Network
>Adapter
-IPv4Address: 192.168.10.1
-Mask: 255.255.255.0
>DHCP
-Enabled: True
-Address: 192.196.10.2
-Mask: 255.255.255.0
-Lower: 192.168.10.100
-Upper: 192.168.10.254
VirtualBox Host-Only #2 Network
>Adapter
-IPv4Address: 192.168.100.1
-Mask: 255.255.255.0
>DHCP
-Enabled: False
My guest OS network settings (within Vbox) are as follows:
Adapter 1
>Enabled: True
>Type: PCnet-FAST III (Am79C973)
>Attached To: Nat
Adapter 2
>Enabled: True
>Type: Host-Only Adapter
>Name: VirtualBox Host-Onle Ethernet Adapter
My guest OS network settings (within Ubuntu) are as follows:
/etc/network/interfaces
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback
auto eth0
iface eth0 inet dhcp
auto ath1
iface eth1 inet static
address 192.168.100.10
netmask 255.255.255.0
network 192.168.100.0
broadcast 192.168.100.255
gateway 192.168.100.1
the resultant of running ifconfig (truncated):
ifconfig
eth0
inet addr: 10.0.2.15
bcast: 10.0.2.255
mask: 255.255.255.0
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST
eth0
inet addr: 192.168.100.10
bcast: 192.168.100.255
mask: 255.255.255.0
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST
now... from my guest OS i have internet activity... i can ping google... Ive downloaded updates and a few packages via apt-get... what i cannot seem todo is get windows XP to be able to see ubuntu...
My end result goal here is to turn this vbox into a spamassassin server that I can have smartermail run spamc to connect to spamd on vbox; but i need to configure an IP on the windows software that can talk to ubuntu... I have spamassassin all setup but this damn networking snaffu has me in a tizzy
any help here is greatly appreciated
thanks!

Setup a second adapter using Bridged.

Re: Host Only + NAT Networking Assistance Needed
OK, so I routed another physical IP to the host machine (on it's primary NIC)
In my network setup for the Guest I disabled the NAT adapter (#1) and changed adapter (#2) to be bridged and set the interface to the be NIC I added another IP to.
In ubuntu I statically set the IP info... now I have zero network connectivity

Re: Host Only + NAT Networking Assistance Needed
Bump
Adapter 1 is NAT
Adapter 2 is "Bridged" and set to the primary NIC on the box. In Ubuntu I've statically assigned one of the IP's tied to the NIC...
I am able to ping out of Ubuntu (google, aol, etc)
However I am not able to SSH into the box from Windows using putty (yes ive installed SSH and OPENSSH-SERVER)
this seems like its more complicated than it needs to be

Re: Host Only + NAT Networking Assistance Needed
You really should read Chapter 6. Virtual networking of the users guide. It covers all of the connection types and how and where to use them.
You have it in the main VBox program under help-contents, or you can read it online here: Online Users Guide

Can you ping the box from vista? firewall anywhere? does ssh work locally?

If you can read this, you can read the VirtualBox Manual, the Forum FAQ, and the QuickClick FAQ

Re: Host Only + NAT Networking Assistance Needed
I read all the types and have played with plenty of different settings... ive also googled this to death... it seems like a simple/common enough configuration but theres no clear concise setup anywhere for getting your host and guest talking both waysPerryg wrote:You really should read Chapter 6. I've tried a whole miriad of things... the ONLY way i get any form of connectivity is to set adapter 1 to NAT and in Ubuntu let it configure via DHCP... if I remove the NAT I get no connectivity inside of ubuntu... ive tried setting up adapter 2 to be bridged and set it to bridge to my primary NIC... I then statically set an IP from the NIC to Ubuntu and still nothing (ssh via putty just says it cant connect)vbox4me2 wrote:Can you ping the box from vista? firewall anywhere? does ssh work locally?
this install of ubuntu is as vanilla as it gets... core system + spamassassin + ssh + openssh-server and of course any dependencies... no ufw, no windows fw (everything is behind a hardware firewall, but with NAT i have no problem getting to the internet for apt-get, ping, etc...)

Re: Host Only + NAT Networking Assistance Needed
well i got it all sorted out
I ended up using just the NAT adapter and: VBoxManage.exe setextradata to port forward my needs through the interface...
