UUID problem

Post by concord101 »

I just upgraded a system to Ubuntu 9.04 from Ubuntu 8.10. Before doing so I tarred up the ~/.VirtualBox directory and have since put it back where it belongs in the new installation. After doing so I installed the OSE version of VirtualBox OSE from the Ubuntu repositories. 2.1.4_OSE is now installed.

When I try to open VirtualBox comes up and offers to upgrade the Virtual Machine to the current version, which I do and a backup is saved automatically. The VM (Windows XP in this case) shows up in the software but when i click the green arrow to start I get this error:
Medium '/home/sherry/.VirtualBox/Machines/Windows XP/Snapshots/{20774ecd-8434-40dd-be21-a67298a378da}.vdi' is not accessible. UUID {e08e5fa2-6b80-4de7-8d7a-9d960ca1dae2} of the hard disk '/home/sherry/.VirtualBox/Machines/Windows XP/Snapshots/{20774ecd-8434-40dd-be21-a67298a378da}.vdi' does not match the value {20774ecd-8434-40dd-be21-a67298a378da} stored in the media registry ('/home/sherry/.VirtualBox/VirtualBox.xml')
What should I do?

Thank you in advance,

- Frank

At this point the easiest thing to do is edit the .virtualbox.xml file "UUID" to match your machine "UUID" as stated in the warning. Be sure that you create a backup of these two files before you start so an error will not kill the install.

That's kinda what's got me baffled. The file name in /home/sherry/.VirtualBox/Machines/Windows XP/Snapshots/ actually is {20774ecd-8434-40dd-be21-a67298a378da}.vdi - /and/ that's the same .vdi file referenced in the VirtualBox.xml file too

Am I missing something?

Try to untar the backup you made to a temp folder and compare the files in the machine folder against the ones you are trying to use. Something must be missing.

Thanks Perry. I honestly don't know what I did but it's working now. I used the GUI and went into the hard disk section. There were more than one hard disk image (I assume one was a snapshot of it or something) anyway there were Exclamation points on the tab and then I deleted a bunch of stuff and reselected it and now it's working fine.

Thanks for taking the time to assist. It's appreciated!

Have a good one!
