using Vbox on vista 64bit

Other users have posted similar questions/problems but I couldn't find any solutions...

I have tried running three different operating systems virtually on my windows vista 64bit system:
ubuntu 9.04 64bit (current version),
windows 7 RC 64bit (7100.0.090421-1700_x64fre_client_en-us_retail_ultimate-grc1culxfrer_en_dvd),
and windows vista 64bit with SP1.

For ubuntu, I managed to make it through the install process but when i try to boot it, all i get is a black screen. I installed this from a CD I burned.
For windows 7, after booting the virtual system "loading files" it will say starting windows just sit there, or BSOD with a memory error. This is from a disc image on my hard drive.
For windows vista, after booting the virtual system "loading files" it will give a black screen. This is from a MS DVD that I installed my actual OS from.

I have each virtual OS set to 16 GB hard drive space, 2048 MB system memory (out of 4 GB), 128 MB video card memory (out of 512 MB), 3d acceleration on.
My video card is a Radeon 3870.

Running the ubuntu in Vbox as a liveCD works fine.
I suspect a video card, video card memory, or memory issue.

If you need any other system specs or Vbox settings I will be happy to provide them.

Thanks in advance

First welcome to the forums,

Have you looked in the bios and made sure that the hardware virtualization is there and that it is turned on?
If you can not find it then you do not have it and trying to install and run 64 bit OSs will not work. Also just having it in bios may not mean that it will work as the processor and the main board must also support hardware-V. You may need to contact the manufacture to find out for certain if it will or will not work.

Yes virtualization is turned on in BIOS. Furthermore, I think my system supports virtualization since I was able to run the ubuntu liveCD in Vbox. I built this computer myself, so there is no manufacturer to contact.
Thanks for the quick reply. :)

What CPU are you running?

You may want to boot with VT-x/ AMD-V turned off and see if your guests will boot.

Report back when you have a chance.

Turning virtualization off causes VBox to give a fail to boot error, as expected.

My processor is AMD 64X2 5600+ running at 3.19GHz.

I can't help you but I have the exactly same problem. 32 bit guest runs fine but no 64 bit guest.
Host pc is
OS:Vista Home basic 64bit
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ (Brisbane core) It supports AMD-V but not nested-paging.

I have tried Windows 7 and FreeBSD 7.0R/7.1R/7.2R.
Windows 7: with installer dvd, "Loading files" then BSOD.
FreeBSD: It can't start init process when it boots from installer cd. A process exited on segmentation fault when it boot from vdi image that is installed/used with v2.1.4. In both cases, it happens right after it tries to mount root file system.

Actually, I have the problem since v2.2.0.
v2.1.4 works fine with both 32 and 64 bit guest. So I am still using v2.1.4.

I have tried disabling sata/usb/etc, check BIOS setting, create new VM but no luck so far... :(

I'll try the older version. It must be an issue with vista 64, right? Hopefully we'll get this issue fixed. Thanks for the input.

If 2.14 works and 2.24 not, take it to bugtracker with the machine log file.
