I was using Kubuntu 7.1 on which I had installed Virtual box 2.1.4. I had a win XP virtual disk on that.
Later ichanged the OS to ubuntu 8.0.4.2 LTS , 64 bit version. The old virtual hard disk is not accessible now.
I can however read the virtual hard disk from WIndows XP.
The hardisk had been initially created on windows, whic I copied onto linux

What could be the solution to this problem?

It sounds like you just need to create a new VM and instead of creating a new Hard Disk for it you should select the VDI that you are wanting to mount into the new system. You will need to be sure that the settings are the same as when you installed it in the other system, but playing around with the settings should make it work for you.

Yes to do that I copied the .Virtualbox folder from my home directory to the new system.
I only made changes to the disk path.
I have feeling that Vbox created a disk ID or something of that sort. This ID is not being accepted by the new system.
Am I right?

Steps I take to move VirtualBox from one computer to another:

First thing to do is make a backup of the original .virtualBox folder and all sub folders.
Next you need to install VirtualBox to the new system, taking care to install the same version that was on the other system.
After you get Virtualbox installed and have checked to see that it is working, you need to close it completely.
Now take the backup of the original system and copy only the virtualbox.xml, and the sub-folders to the new install. Do not copy the program files from the windows version. This will replace the virtualbox.xml with the original file and also include the file structure that you need to be able to use the original files. After this you should be able to return to the way it was in the other system. If you had to change the folder locations which it sounds like you have because it was created on a Windows system you will need to edit the virtualbox.xml and the machine.xml files to match the new location if you can not set this in the preferences section of VirtualBox.
