Hello everyone,

I just installed virtualbox 2.2, I'm using ubuntu intrepid 64 bit. I have windows xp 64 bit installed on another partition.

I went through some tutorials and created a virtual machine using my existing partition.

I got everything to work but when I boot windows I get

"windows could not start because of a general hardware configuration problem, attempting to load a x64 bit operating system however this CPU is not compatible with x64 bit mode, please install a x86 32 bit operating system".

I dont get it ... I have a intel pentium dual core II 64 bit processor and the usermanual states that no further configuration is required if your using a 64 bit host and guest.

Anyway, any help would be appreciated.

oh and before we go that route ... it already has "enable vt-x/amd-v" checked .. it is checked and grayed so I cant "uncheck" it.

Without activated VT that doesnt work.

Ok, ya i knew that would be my first reply ... thats why i said

It is checked, does that mean its enabled ? Its checked AND grayed so i cant UN check it what does that mean ?


Oh and you cant "search" for "VT" its too short . . . since there were "trillions" of posts about this already could you not have linked to at least one ?

The key here is the grayed out part. That means that VBox does not see the system as 64 bit Hardware virtualizer enabled and neither does Windows while within VBox. Look at the system bios and make sure that you have the hardware-v turned on. If you do not see this in the bios you do not have it and it will not work. If you do have it and it is turned on but still does not work, some people have had to update their bios and some had to contact the hardware manufacture only to find out that it was not supported or that the manufacture had disabled it and will not enable it for them.

Thanks for the help man ! It was so confusing that it was grayed out AND checked, funny when i used another version it was grayed out and not checked .... but i guess grayed out means that the virtualizer is not activated/there in any case.

Thanks again, great software and good support community makes wonderful things. Ill install a 32 bit version if i cant get the hardware-v to work.

Turns out i dont have hardware virtualization, but for anyone else that reads this one out of a trillion post there is a nice list of intel cpu's and if they support hardware v or not here http://www.tomshardware.com/news/window ... ,7709.html
