How do I backup VBI properly?????

I have typed:
Code: Select all
VBoxManage clonehd ~/.VirtualBox/VDI/XP.vdi ~/XP_090531.vdi
Till I'm blue in the face. When I put it on my second computer, I only have an old snapshot, not the current snapshot I made today. What am I doing wrong? I don't have any of the snapshots! (There were about 5 of them).
Thx

Snapshots are not included in a clone or an export only the current state.

If the new Host is the same OS type, then you can copy the whole .VirtualBox folder from your /home to the new host. All VMs you have stored there will be available on the new host, with the same settings and all. You do need the same version of VB, or newer for it to work. You can't mix PUEL created VMs with OSE ones, but the other way around is possible when it comes to settings. VDIs can be transferred between PUEL and OSE without issues.

Thanks, I will try that. My problem was I was only getting the original .vbi, not the current state (or any previous snapshots). I mentioned the snapshots because I had taken one just before trying to clone the hd. I will try copying the whole subdirectory. I am copying from Ubuntu 9.04 to XUbuntu 9.04 so that might just work

I wasn't talking about the Linux version, I was talking about the VirtualBox version. You can't use the PUEL settings (the one you get from the website) with the OSE one (the one in the default repository). Nor can you use VM settings from 2.2 on 2.1.
