Hi,

Running as host: Windows XP-SP2
Installed version of VirtualBox: 2.2.2
Installed Guest OS: Ubuntu 8.04LTS (Hardy)

I've set VirtualBox to use the network in Bridging mode.
Choses as bridge is the: Intel PRO/1000MT Desktop adapter (VirualBox)
It connects to the real adapter in Xindows, a: 82567/LM Giga Network Connection.
Windows has an extra extra network driver(connection) installed "VirtualBox Host-Only Ethernet Adapter.
This adapter has alll the same settings and possibilities as the windows-XP adapter.
The settings are the same as the windows adapter.
TCPIP: DHCP, autoconfiguration IP address, ....

The difference is that:
The windows local area connectionuse a "Virtual Bridged networking Driver"
while the VirtualBox Host-Only has this drver not 'ticked' (Doesn't use it).

Both the host and gues OS can surf and browse the web --> That's OK.

BUT:
The IP address of VirtualBox is of the same range than the IP address of the HOst (Windows-XP).

Example:
The DHCP router sets IP address, and outher auto-stuff as DNS, Gateway, ...
For teh Windows adapter this is something as:
DHCP enabled: yes
Autoconfiguartion Enabled: yes
IP address: 192.168.a.b
Default Gateway: 192.168.a.c
DNS Servers: My IP provider DNS servers.

The VirtualBox host-Only network adapter it is:
DHCP enabled: yes
Autoconfiguartion Enabled: yes
IP address: 169.254.x.y
Default Gateway: ......... (None)

Why is the VirtualBox adapter not getting the same range of IP address as the real adapter?
I thought that bridging meant that VirtualBox was looking over the shoulder of teh real adapter (kind of parallel construction) so that it normally should get
IP addresses of the same range as the original IP address.

Is there a way to make VirtualBox get IP addresses in teh same range as the original IP address?

Check the manual for the different network options. Host-Only is a virtual NIC used for Host <> Guest communications. You set it's IP address and all in the VB preferences. It's not a good idea to set that adapter in the same range, that will cause trouble on your network.

Ok, Understood. So I leave the Host-Only NIC with it's settings because it is for communication between the HOST and the GUEST OS.
I then gues that, because I've chosen 'Bridging mode' that all network configuration must be done into the guest OS.
The gues OS network stuff is looking over the shoulder of the host network stuff if you like to say it this way.

Am I correct?

The Host-Only adapter is only used when you attach a VM to it, else it won't do anything.

As for the bridged mode, the Guest only uses the Host NIC, nothing else. The Host doesn't know about it's traffic, only if you use a packet sniffer to capture them. Same goes the other way around, the Guest doesn't see or know about the traffic to and from the Host.
