3d acceleration on sabayon 4.1 guest

Post by christiano88 »

Virtualbox version: 2.2.2
Host OS: Windows 7
Guest OS: Sabayon 4.1

When trying to install guest additions for linux I get the following error:

Image

As you can see I have a newer version of kernel core(2.6.29) and yet I get this error. I have enabled 3d acceleration in vbox settings. I need to install additions to get compiz 3d desktop effects.

This is the log mentioned in konsole: /var/log/vboxadd-install.log

Just do what the log said, install the kernel-headers. Without that, you can't build kernel modules. Check your distro repository and/or documentation to see what package you need to get the headers.

I'm really new to linux, I took the chance to virtualise it because opengl acceleration was introduced in virtualbox since version 2 and I wanted to see the compiz effects. If someone can explain like a guide for dummies, I would appreciate very much!
Till now I tried the following commands:
equo update
equo update --force

eselect kernel list
then
eselect kernel set kernelnumber

equo install linux-sabayon

But to no avail. on equo update it started downloading and finished successfully but then said that I should update entropy before anything else.

For questions on how to use the OS itself it's best to go to a more specialized forum, like that of the distro. We only discuss how to use VB, not an OS you can run inside it. This is not in the scope of this forum.

Sasquatch I'm pretty sure it is regarding how to use VB, since the whole point is that I cannot install guest additions which is part of VB.

True, but how to install the kernel headers is a linux specific thing. Not everyone knows how each distro works. We have the commands for the more common distro's, but Sabayon just isn't that common. So check the repo, the website and their forum for what package you need to install to be able to create kernel modules.

Hi, I just run in to the same problem. Host vista x64, vbox 2.2.4 (3x is useless). Installed sabayon and when trying to install GA got your same output.
I know how to install stuff in ubuntu distros but sabayon is tottally new for me.
So if you find out how please post it here?
tnx :D
