If the guest (Xp) is 32 bit you will need to make sure that the check mark is taken off the VT-x/AMD-v box in general advanced settings for the guest.
Also while you are there set the system memory to 512 and the video memory to 64 to start with Windows really gets mad sometimes when it does not have the standard memory allocations, and will cause crashes. Also make sure that the check mark is off for the 3D effects, and no filters are in the USB section. This causes exactly what you are showing

Sorry I missed your post the other day. First thing there is a new maintenance version out ver 2.2.4 that addresses a few things about the way VBox installs programs. You should download and install it. Save the download to a place that you can easily find and then right click on the install icon and then left click on run as administrator. Then see if you can install the XP. Let us know.

You seem to have one of the rare occasions when there is a compatibility problem between VBox and Vista. You should post a bug in bugtracker and let the Developers help with this. You will need to send them the information and since you do not have an install log you will need to tell them that in big bold letters. The link is below my post and you will need to create an account there, but they will be able to help you with this. By the way if you click on the problem details button at the bottom of the warning you will see what Vista is upset about. Post that here as well.
