SATA controllers enabled cause VERR_PDM_DEVICE_NOT_FOUND

Hi,
I'm trying to install an XP Guest (with slipstreamed SATA drivers) onto my gentoo linux VBox OSE 2.2 host. If in the virtual machine settings, I enable SATA (AHCI) and create a new hdd image from scratch, and select it as my SATA port 0, I get the error VERR_PDM_DEVICE_NOT_FOUND. vboxdrv and vboxnetflt are loaded and working. If I disable SATA, and change the image to IDE Primary Master, my machine boots.
This appears to be an issue with Virtual Box itself, and not with the guest OS, because I never even get to 'Press F12 for boot menu'.
I'd like to get SATA working if at all possible, any ideas?
Thanks
