Can't Connect to TVersity When VirtualBox Is Installed

Post by Parallax Abstraction »

Hey all. This question relates to another product and how it fails to work when VirtualBox is installed. I have tried asking this question on their forums but the developers ignore them so I am hoping I can have more success in resolving this here.

I run the TVersity media streaming service on my Vista PC and have been quite some time now. I have an Xbox 360 and PS3 and play content through them both. I just recently installed the latest edition of VirtualBox as well. Since then, my PS3 cannot see my TVersity server and my 360 can see it but won't connect to it. As soon as VirtualBox is uninstalled from my machine, TVersity becomes accessible again. I used to run VMWare and didn't have this problem with it. I am presuming this has something to do with VirtualBox's virtual NIC driver but I am not sure. Here's what I've tried so far to resolve this:

1. Uninstalling the virtual network adapter. Doesn't resolve the issue, only fully uninstalling VirtualBox does.
2. Going into the advanced settings for Vista networking and setting the VirtualBox driver to the bottom of the list of adapters (it sits at the top by default.) This didn't help.
3. Manually setting TVersity to run only through my PCs wired NIC and changing the port it runs on. This didn't help.

Here's the strange part: Last Saturday, I tried moving the VirtualBox driver back to the top of the list of adapters in Vista and manually setting TVersity to my wired NIC. This solution seemed to work perfectly at the time. However, a few hours later the same symptoms returned, even though I hadn't so much as rebooted my PC. I tried several other tweaks and reboots which didn't help. Once again, only fully uninstalling VIrtualBox made TVersity accessible again.

I am at my wits end as to what is not getting along between these two applications and what I can do to resolve it. I'm hoping this isn't just an inherent compatibility problem and that some kind of adjustment can be made to make them place nice. Since I am new to VirtualBox, I am hoping some of the wizards in this forum can assist. Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks everyone!

I've just encountered this exact same problem about 15 mins ago. I installed Virtual Box only last night. I've been using TVserity as a media server for my PS3 for almost a year now. And suddenly this...

I can't help, but I'll be very interested in a solution.

This appears to work for me... for now anyway...

Ijust set the IP address of the physical NIC in the TVersity "Home Network" setting.

Time will tell if it's a permanent fix.

Yeah, theoretically that should be all that's required to resolve the problem but it doesn't seem to work in a permanent fashion for me. I haven't discovered anything new on this issue but I'm continuing to try stuff. Hopefully something sticks.

Well, it's been more than 24 hours now, and I am yet to have a problem. The PS3 has been power-cycled several times, and I've started-up/shutdown VirtualBox a few times as well.

Fingers crossed it's a permanent solution for me. :mrgreen:

I should add I'm still running the previous version (pre 1.6) of TVersity. I'm loathe to install 1.6 in case it stops working for me!

I was running 1.5 and tried in vain to upgrade to 1.6 to solve this problem so I don't think the version is the problem. Have you custom-configured your VirtualBox NIC in any way or is it all defaults? Also, what wired NIC are you using? I'm wondering if this is an issue with my drivers too. Thanks!

My wired NIC is the on-board Intel PRO/1000 on my ASUS mobo.
In total I have (from Device Manager):
* 1394 NET Adapter
* Intel(R) PRO/1000 CT Network Connection
* TAP-Win32 Adapter V8
* VirtualBox Host-Only Ethernet Adapter
VirtualBox configuration is pretty much out-of-the-box. I certainly haven't played with any network connection options.

Good luck!

Very weird. I have a different NIC (RealTek) but other than that, my setup is very similar to you.

I just thought I'd update the thread with a note that the new 2.24 version didn't fix the problem. I installed the new version and my TVersity did work. I rebooted immediately and could still access it so I was hopeful. Then I shut my PC down for the night later on and since booting it back up the next morning, TVersity hasn't been accessible again. I just removed VirtualBox and once again, it came back. I really have no idea what to do from here but I'll keep trying random stuff and see what shakes out.

I haven't used TVversity before but theres two things that VirtualBox does in terms of Networking (i think)

1. It creates that Host only adapter
2. It add a Bridged Networking Driver to all the Network Adapters

I would advise you try and get rid of the Host only adapter and go into the Properties of your network adapters and untick the box of saying "VirtualBox Host Interface Networking Driver"

That may fix your problem if it's a networking issue with TVversity, but will get rid of Host Only networking and Host Interface Networking so they won't work until you turn them back on, but you can still use NAT and internal Networking
