I have a dual boot machine with XP on the first partition. I would like to use dd to place a copy of the native XP image onto a virtual disk in order to run XP under VB on the same machine. I do not want to use VB to run the native XP install.

Any reason why the XP copy wouldn't launch under VB? Any reason that I wouldn't be able to switch back and forth between launching the native install and the virtual install?

Checked the Howto at the top (Run XP native and in a VM)? That howto has some things you need to do before you can run your native Windows in a VM. Also check the topic a bit down discussing the conversion from native to VM using an image tool like CloneZilla.
