Hi there,

I'm some kind of newbie with virtualbox, I've installed virtualbox latest release on my ubuntu 9.04 and "mounted" windows XP on it, but now with the windows XP installed, i can't install video drivers, and the sound drivers doesn't work..ooh yes, and the web camera doesn't work as well to make video conference in windows live messenger.

Do you know why this happens?

• 1. Have you installed the Guest Additions? This will improve your video a lot and must be installed to get USB and Shared folders to work.
  2. The video drivers can not be installed from within the XP guest. It runs on the VBoxvideo driver.
  3. For sound you should check to make sure that the audio is turned on in the VM settings and that the ICH AC97 sound is selected.
  3a. If you still can not get sound you should download the realtek drivers from realtek.com and then see if they will work. Also a lot of people have been able to get it to work by letting Windows do an update which installs the drivers.
  4. Web cams are another issue. I assume this is a USB device. First thing is to create a blank filter in the VM USB settings. Then when you boot the guest you unplug and plug the device back in to get focus. If it is going to work that is the way it will need to be done. Most people have problems with cameras.

Look at the image. Click the blue dot.

Then you need to boot the guest and unplug the device and plug it back in for the guest to get focus. Remember though I said it more than likely will not work. Most people do not get cameras to work for some reason.

I didn't have that USB option in the menu on the left :S

If you do not have the USB section then you are using the OSE version (I can't believe I missed asking that question) of the software. You can install the PUEL version and it will have the USB section for you to be able to use most devices. You would need to uninstall the OSE version before installing the PUEL version and you can get it at virtualbox.org. As long as you do not purge virtualbox I think all of your settings should stay and be picked up by the PUEL version when you install.

I've installed the PUEL version now, and the USB option appears now.

but i keep with the same problem :S but now the camera, and other USB devices appear on: Devices > USB Devices, but i can't select anyone of then

I have the same problem with a couple of USB2.0 devices, but not all. I'm figuring that there are some USB2.0 devices like my printer and scanner that will work with 1.0 or 1.1, while others, like the built-in webcam and external fingerprint scanner, that don't cotton to 1.0 or 1.1 standards. I plug in the printer and scanner, and they show up, are selectable and work flawlessly, while the webcam and fingerprint scanner show up, but are greyed-out.

I have poured over responses in the forums and it *seems* that I have tried everything that's been suggested, so it seems like there are just some devices that won't function until there's full USB2.0 support. I could be wrong, though -- anyone else have any insight into this?

If you followed my suggestion of using a blank filter (.) as indicated in the screen shot I sent and then after opening the guest and unplugging the device and then plugging it back in and it still does not work then it more than likely will not work. As I said not all devices do and especially when it comes to cameras.
