Tip : How to know it's hdd serial no under Windows (Vista) ?

Post by Finiderire »

Hi,

I'm posting this tip as I have been searching for the answer with no luck and finally found it by myself. When you configure a virtual machine USB in Settings - USB - add Filtes from Device, you have the list of your USB devices displayed. The issue is if you have several times the same hardware : the only difference in the list could be the Serial No (or Product ID) which are not easily comprehensive to identify a device. Now go to Explorer and right click on a drive (eg. C:) then
go into Properties - Hardware - select a drive you would like to identify then continue to Properties - Details and select Device Instance Path.
You'll obtain something like USBSTOR\DISK&VEN_aaa&PROD_bbbbbbbbbbbbb&REV_cc.c\abc123456foo654321bar&0 Don't care about aaa, bbbbbbbbbbbb and cc.c part. But read the abc123456foo654321bar part : it's your device's serial no. You may write it down or memorize it.

You are now able to identify a device in the list provided by Virtual Box. Any comment appreciated.

a+, =)
